Taxi Test Training Course
What the test involves?
The Taxi Test is designed to enhance driver competence that will lead to increased customer confidence and levels of service. Conducted by a DSA examiner specifically trained to conduct the Taxi Test Assessment, each test is booked in the normal way by calling a DSA Taxi Test booking line. Each test takes approximately 40 minutes to complete and operates from a local test centre. Following a prescribed route, candidates are tested for
- Awareness and anticipation
- Effective planning according to varying road and traffic conditions
- Correct use of speed
- Controlled manoeuvres
- A special taxi manoeuvre
Securely administered
On arrival at the test centre, each candidate must show endorsed photographic identification, a current licence and the test appointment card.
DSA Pass certificate
After the test, all candidates are given a verbal debrief and a copy of the test report. Unsuccessful candidates receive advice on training and successful candidates are presented with a pass certificate.

The taxi driver benefits from an increased credibility because of the official certification. Benefits for the local authority include the ability to provide positive consumer protection and a quality audited service to the community, in addition to better-prepared and safer taxi drivers.
Objective real world testing
The Driving Standards Agency has introduced a test specifically designed to examine the standard of Hackney Carriage and Private Hire drivers working in partnership with local authorities. The test reflects modern driving practices and conditions, the standard is set higher than the learner driver test and includes specific elements.
During the Test
You will be asked to carryout two driving manoeuvres in which you will be asked to turn the car around in the road by whatever means you consider safest in order to pickup a passenger. You will choose the first and then the examiner will choose and ask you to carryout a second manoeuvre.
On several occasions you will be asked to pull up at the side of the road as if to pick up or drop off a passenger.
At the end of the test you will be asked questions on the Highway Code and taxi related information.
You will also be required to:
- Pass a Medical
- Pass a Taxi Knowledge Test
- Make an application to the Criminal Records Bureau for a CRB check.
